It’s a non-invasive therapy proven to reduce pain, accelerate recovery, and improve function. Whether you’re struggling with chronic tendon issues or conditions like plantar fasciitis, Shockwave Therapy can be a powerful part of your recovery plan. We’ve seen excellent results with this treatment, in line with growing research showing that Shockwave Therapy is both safe and clinically effective. Many patients report significant improvements after just one or two sessions. However, while Shockwave Therapy effectively targets the site of pain or injury, it doesn’t always address the underlying causes — such as muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, or poor biomechanics. That’s why we combine it with a comprehensive physiotherapy plan to correct these issues and help prevent recurrence. This integrated approach often leads to better long-term outcomes than using Shockwave alone. What is Shockwave Therapy? Shockwave Therapy (also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy, radial shockwave therapy, or radial pressure wave therapy) uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured tissues. A handheld probe delivers these waves directly to the affected area. The sound waves stimulate your body’s natural repair mechanisms — increasing blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and promoting tissue regeneration. Your physiotherapist will adjust the intensity, frequency, and number of pulses based on clinical guidelines and your individual tolerance and condition. Conditions We Treat with Shockwave Therapy Shockwave Therapy is especially effective for chronic soft tissue injuries and tendinopathies. Research has shown that it often performs... --- These days, it is common for children to have multiple days and nights of sporting commitments. While this is something that helps build children physically, socially, and mentally; all of the time spent training and participating in sports can take a toll. Doctors and other health practitioners see numerous injuries from overuse in school-age athletes. The problem tends to increase when a holiday break is over and activities resume. The most typical sites for overuse pain are the achilles, knee, hip or groin. Often pain in these areas has the same cause, a condition called Apophysitis. The disorder tends to present itself in young athletes who are still growing. It begins in the apophysis, one of several growth plates serving as an attachment for a muscle-tendon pair. Because younger athletes are still growing, the apophysis is still a weak part of the body. Continuous use causes the painful inflammation associated with this stress-related injury. Additionally, trauma to the site can result in hairline fractures and other problems. Three sites are where Apophysitis most commonly occurs include: The Heel- (Medical Name: Calcaneal Apophysis)-Also Called Sever’s Disease. This disorder typically found in males and females between 8-12 years old. Below the Kneecap- (Medical Name: Tibial Tuberosity)-Also Called Osgood Schlatter’s Disease. This syndrome usually strikes males between 12-15 years of age and females 8-13 years of age. The Groin- (Medical Name: Pubic Symphysis)-Also Called Osteitis Pubis. This disease occurs in both males and females 15 years old or older. For most younger athletes... --- Cyclists often devote many hours enjoying their favourite activity. Unfortunately, all of the repetitive motion required to cycle frequently causes overuse injuries. While an overuse injury can occur at any point of the body, cyclists usually experience these injuries in their knees, hips, hamstrings, shoulders, necks, and backs. To avoid these problems, cyclists must work to maintain good flexibility, core strength, and coordination. In addition to overuse injuries, cyclists often experience injuries because they and their bike do not fit well together.  Past injuries are an essential factor to consider. This is the case for cyclists just starting, as well as those who are very experienced. Bike Fit at Kardinya Physiotherapy When a cyclist is not positioned well on their bike the result is usually discomfort, impaired performance and increased risk of injury.  Just like any other piece of equipment, the bike should undergo inspection to be sure it is suited for the rider. Additionally, if a cyclist has experienced injuries in the past, it is wise to consider a professional bike fitting. Adjustments to compensate for the rider’s changes in strength or flexibility are often needed. When a small problem develops in your feet, a subtle reaction in the way you walk causes a chain reaction that alters the way you move, the stress on your joints and your posture. Detecting and correcting these abnormalities could be the key to making you pain free. How does it work?   Orthotics are insoles that fit comfortably inside your shoes to help restore normal balance and pressure on your muscles and joints, letting you get on pain free with your sport or daily life. To determine if foot abnormalities are a cause of your pain and whether orthotics will be of benefit, your physiotherapist will combine their knowledge and experience with an assessment of your gait pattern (how you walk), alignment and foot mechanics. To best suit your specific requirements be it, field sport, running, work boots, or steel caps, we can prescribe either: full length or 3/4 length orthotics; soft, medium or firm densities; or even low-profile orthotics designed for low-cut women shoes. In most cases orthotics are intended for temporary use (2 to 6 months) and integrated with a physiotherapy treatment regime. Effectiveness is enhanced when orthotics are combined with a treatment program designed to correct the poor alignment and mechanics contributing to the problem. Dry Needling typically refers to the use of solid filiform needles (acupuncture needles) to stimulate specific therapeutic reactions in the target tissue. No agent or substance is injected into the body. Unlike the traditional Eastern use of needles known as acupuncture, the Western scientific method of dry needling is an evidence based approach. The body of research supporting the beneficial use of dry needling in the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions has grown substantially in recent years. How does it work? Dry needling has been proven to be a very effective way of relaxing spasmed muscles, thereby relieving pain and helping muscle and other tissues to heal. Trigger points are tight, hypersensitive bands of muscle. Inserting a needle into a trigger point results in: The release of Histamine such as when we are stung by a bee or getting a splinter. This elicits a healing response by increasing blood flow and activating cells responsible for repair. The stimulation of specific sensory nerve fibres that desensitise pain messages reaching the central nervous system. A neurohormonal effect causes the release of endorphins and other pain relieving hormones. Physiotherapists often combine it with other treatment techniques to achieve superior results faster. Physiotherapy aims to restore normal movement to joints and muscles when injured. In chronic conditions, emphasis is put into restoring functional movement and strength. Physiotherapy focuses on muscles, the spine, nerves and joints of the body. Core muscles are important in maintaining stability and strength of the upper and lower body. When the base of the body is unstable or weak, the client is likely to develop disorders as a result of the poor core support. The most obvious benefits of physiotherapy are the anatomical and physiological changes, but which also impact on other elements including the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of a client’s well being. What should I expect from a Physiotherapy Consultation? At your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will ask you a series of questions about your complaint to better understand how it is affecting you and your lifestyle. Following this your physiotherapist will conduct a range of tests to determine where the nature and cause of your complaint is, and how to best treat it. These tests can range from testing your joint range of movement, muscle strength and flexibility, identifying what reproduces your pain, analysis of your posture and palpation of specific parts of the body. The assessment is followed by a discussion with you as to the goals and plan for treatment, what is expected and your contribution to the process. Sure, competition can be fierce, and so to can a young athlete’s ambition and love of sport. However, all that playing time adds up and takes a toll on an adolescent’s body. This is especially true for young athletes who specialise in a single sport. In fact, children who specialise in a single sport and spend more hours than their age each week practicing and playing it are 70 percent more likely to suffer an overuse injury. This means a 14-year old who spends three hours each day playing soccer, football, cricket, tennis, netball, basketball, or any other sport is at an increased risk of experiencing an overuse injury. Moreover, young athletes who play one sport for eight or more months out of the year are three times as likely to suffer a knee or hip-related overuse injuries. To make matters worse, it’s not uncommon for many children and adolescents to have sporting commitments on several days of the week. While this is great for their social, mental, and physical development, it puts wear and tear on their bodies and boosts their odds of being sidelined with overuse injuries. These injuries are often caused by repetitive trauma to the joints, tendons, and bones and commonly cause pain in the hip, knee, Achilles, and/or groin. Since children and young teens are still growing, their bones are weaker than their muscles and tendons, increasing the risk of growth plate injuries. Unlike other... --- Getting an ankle sprain can be painful and depending on the severity of this common injury, the road back to full recovery could be just a couple of weeks or even a few months. Whether playing sports or simply stepping off the curb from a sidewalk, people can sprain their ankle when they suddenly twist, roll, or turn their foot in an awkward way that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. To put into perspective the prevalence of ankle sprain injuries, the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society reports that everyday 25,000 people sprain their ankle. This article is intended to address the role of the Physiotherapist in diagnosing and treating ankle injuries and how patients can benefit from their expertise as they seek a path to rehabilitation. The Anatomy of an Ankle Sprain A basic review of human anatomy reveals that there are 26 bones in each human foot and that the ankle joint is attached to three adjoining bones.  According to an article from WebMD, an explanation of how the ankle joint is connected with the foot includes the following: The tibia, which is the main bones of the lower leg, makes up the medial or inside of the ankle joint. The Fibula is the smaller bones that parallels the tibia in the lower leg and makes up the lateral or outside of the ankle joint. The far ends of both the tibia and fibula are known as the malleoli (singular is malleolus). Together they form an... --- Plantar Fasciitis is a painful and uncomfortable condition that causes inflammation of connective tissues and is primarily concentrated in the heel. These connective tissues are part of the plantar fascia, which is a thick ligament located in the arch of the foot and spans from the heel to the toes. What may initially feel like a slight discomfort in the foot, can eventually progress to a stabbing or burning type of pain that makes it intolerable to walk. While this article will address causes, symptoms and traditional treatment options, a major emphasis will be on addressing the benefits of a high-load strength training program for Plantar Fasciitis. To demonstrate the impact that plantar fasciitis can have on people’s lives, “The X Brace” presents 10 compelling facts: Facts About Plantar Fasciitis Foot Fact #1: Did you know 1-in-10 people struggle with Plantar Fasciitis at some point in their life? Yup! That’s a lot of people! Foot Fact #2: Your Plantar Fascia is incredibly strong! The average amount of stress that is put on your feet for every mile walked is approximately 60 tons. Foot Fact #3: 1/4 of all your bones are in your feet and your Plantar Fascia plays a big role in keeping them all supported and in alignment! Foot Fact #4: Approximately 1 in 5 people have high arches, which is a common contributor to Plantar Fasciitis. Foot Fact #5: Approximately 1 in 4 people have flat feet, which is also a contributor to Plantar Fasciitis. Foot Fact #6: The Plantar Fascia is one of the... --- Do you remember the times you mentioned to a friend, colleague or family member that “I feel a headache coming on? ” If your answer is yes, then you are one of millions of people who have experienced the throbbing and sometimes extremely painful sensation of a headache. Getting a headache is not only painful, but also disruptive because it interferes with your ability to focus or concentrate on tasks and can even make it difficult for you to fall asleep. To put into perspective the impact that headaches can have on our lives, headaches and migraines are among the most common disorders of the human nervous system worldwide. While there are many types of headaches whose onset of discomfort can originate from a variety of causes, this article will focus on the unique nature of cervicogenic headaches. Deconstructing Cervicogenic Headache What is commonly referred to as a “neck headache,” research has proven that the point of origin of cervicogenic headaches (CGH) occur in the upper cervical spine or soft tissues of the neck. Discomfort from a CGH can spread to the frontal-temporal areas of the head, which results in feeling the secondary effects of this painful condition. Cervicogenic Headache vs Migraine Cervicogenic headache is referred pain (pain perceived as occurring in a part of the body other than its true source) perceived in the head from a source in the neck. Cervicogenic headache is a secondary headache, which means that it is caused by another illness or physical issue. It’s important... --- COVID-19 Update I would like to update everyone on our current situation, and want to give you as much information as possible about what we are doing to keep you safe.
